The ultimate dog-friendly day trip guide to Kenilworth

Bolt and friends on a dog-friendly day trip to Kenilworth

Looking for a dog-friendly day trip from Brisbane? Kenilworth is one of those places that feels made for a day of muddy paws, happy dogs and good company.

With beautiful country scenery, plenty of trails to explore and a relaxed, dog-friendly country-town atmosphere, it's the perfect spot to pack the car, grab your best four-legged mate and spend the day adventuring.

Kenilworth at a glance

  • 📍  Distance from Brisbane: approximately 157km / 2 hours
  • 🌿  Scenery: rolling hills, fields, cows, trees and beautiful country landscapes
  • 🥾  Walking: several trails and hiking options, with some steep sections
  • 🐾  Dog-friendly: very welcoming and relaxed
  • 🍴  Food: Kenilworth Bakery, Kenilworth Dairies and Kenilworth Hotel Brewery
  • 🐕  Best for: dogs who love exploring, sniffing, walking and getting outside

The walking and hiking options around Kenilworth aren't necessarily for complete beginners - some tracks have quite steep sections, so both you and your dog will want a moderate level of fitness if you're planning a longer adventure. But if your dog loves getting out and exploring, there is plenty to keep them entertained.

Our Kenilworth dog-friendly day

Sometimes you just need to blow off work, get the dogs in the car and go somewhere new. That's exactly what we did.

On Wednesday 5 August 2026, Emma and Bolt swapped the usual work day for a proper midweek adventure with some of Bolt's best friends - two Mini Dachshunds, another Great Dane and their humans.

What started as a day out quickly turned into 12km of trails, zoomies, splashing, muddy paws, fresh air and very tired dogs. And honestly? It was exactly what we all needed.

Morning: hit the trails

We headed into Imbil State Forest and set off to explore the many trails throughout the forest. Our main adventure was a 9km loop, which took us just under three hours to complete, and the dogs absolutely loved it.

There were new smells around every corner, long grass to investigate, muddy puddles to play in, fresh air and plenty of opportunities to explore. For the dogs, it was basically the ultimate sensory experience - they could sniff, wander, explore and take in all the new sights and smells at their own pace. And, of course, there were plenty of zoomies.

With two Great Danes and two Mini Dachshunds in the group, the size difference was pretty hilarious - but they were all equally excited to be there.

The trail wasn't just about walking. We stopped along the way to take photos, enjoy the scenery, watch for wildlife and let the dogs investigate their surroundings. There is something pretty special about watching your dog experience somewhere completely new - every smell needs investigating, every sound needs attention, and every patch of long grass is apparently hiding something very important. And every muddy puddle? Obviously made for dogs.

By the time we finished the 9km loop, we had four very happy dogs, four very dirty dogs and four very tired dogs. We'd call that a win.

Lunch at Kenilworth Bakery

After working up a serious appetite, we headed into town for lunch at the famous Kenilworth Bakery. And let's be honest - a trip to Kenilworth isn't complete without stopping at the bakery.

We grabbed ourselves sausage rolls, doughnuts and coffees with cold foam, while the dogs got their very own doggy doughnuts. The bakery is extremely dog-friendly, with outdoor tables and chairs under shaded cloth, as well as clean toilets.

We decided to grab our food to take away and head down to Little Yabba Park, where we found a lovely shaded picnic table and settled in for lunch. Handy to know - there's a drop toilet on site too, so it's a good stop if you're travelling with a full car. It was the perfect way to slow down after a morning of hiking. The humans got lunch, the dogs got doggy doughnuts, and everyone was happy.

Afternoon: explore Kenilworth

After lunch, we weren't quite ready to call it a day, so we headed off to explore Little Yabba Park and the surrounding creek and parklands, adding another 3km of adventuring to our day.

The dogs loved rolling around in the lush green grass and exploring the creek. Despite the water being absolutely freezing, that didn't stop them from getting straight in - apparently cold water is not a deterrent when you're a dog having the best day ever.

By the end of the afternoon, the dogs had well and truly made the most of their adventure. 12km for the day - not bad for a Wednesday.

Why Kenilworth is worth the trip with your dog

Kenilworth is the kind of place that makes you want to slow down and spend the whole day exploring. For dogs, there's so much stimulation outside of their everyday environment - new smells, different surroundings, fresh air, wildlife, water and plenty of opportunities to explore. It's particularly great for dogs who love being outdoors and getting their noses stuck into absolutely everything.

Whether you've got a Great Dane who needs room to stretch their legs, a little Dachshund who thinks they're a Great Dane, or anything in between, there's something pretty special about getting your dog out of their usual environment.

The town itself also has a really welcoming, relaxed and dog-friendly feel. There was only one place we noticed that didn't seem particularly keen on dogs - the local op shop, which had handwritten no dogs signs displayed around the yard. Everywhere else, the dogs felt very much part of the adventure.

A few dog-friendly stops to add to your day

  • 🐾  Kenilworth Bakery - a must-visit for your classic bakery treats, coffee and, of course, a doggy doughnut for your four-legged friend.
  • 🐾  Kenilworth Dairies - definitely worth adding to your list if you're a cheese lover.
  • 🐾  Kenilworth Hotel Brewery - if you're after a more relaxed lunch, the hotel brewery offers a great spot to sit back on the deck and enjoy a cheeky drink.

Just remember to check current dog-access arrangements before visiting, as policies can change.

Make a night of it

If a day trip isn't enough, Kenilworth and the surrounding Mary Valley have plenty of dog-friendly camping and caravan options, so it's easy to turn this into an overnight adventure instead of rushing the drive home. Give your chosen spot a call first to check their dog policy and any leash or fencing requirements before you book.

What to pack for a dog-friendly Kenilworth adventure

If you're planning your own Kenilworth adventure, don't just grab the dog and go. Okay, you can. But we'd recommend packing a few essentials first.

  • 🐾  Harness or collar
  • 🐾  ID tag or Apple AirTag
  • 🐾  Lead
  • 🐾  Long line
  • 🐾  Plenty of fresh water
  • 🐾  Pop-up travel bowl
  • 🐾  Treats
  • 🐾  Poop bags
  • 🐾  Towel, plus a spare towel or change of gear
  • 🐾  First-aid kit for dogs and humans
  • 🐾  Your dog's favourite toy
  • 🐾  Mosquito repellant for dogs and humans
  • 🐾  Sunscreen for dogs and humans
  • 🐾  BLD On-the-Go Pet Mat
Don't forget tick prevention. If you're heading into bushland, make sure your dog's flea and tick prevention is up to date. Paralysis ticks are a serious concern in parts of Queensland, so speak with your vet about the most appropriate prevention before heading out. It's one of those things you don't want to think about on your day out, but absolutely should.

And most importantly, pack the towel. Even if you swear your dog isn't going swimming - they'll find a way.

Our tips for visiting Kenilworth with your dog

  • 🐾  Start early. Getting out early means cooler temperatures and plenty of time to enjoy your day without rushing.
  • 🐾  Bring more water than you think you'll need. A 12km day is a lot different from your usual neighbourhood walk.
  • 🐾  Check the weather before leaving. Conditions can make some trails much more challenging, particularly after rain.
  • 🐾  Check trail rules before you go. Dog access can vary between different forests, reserves and walking areas.
  • 🐾  Consider a long line. If your dog doesn't have perfect recall, it can give them more freedom to explore while staying safely under control where permitted.
  • 🐾  Keep your dog leashed where required. Even friendly dogs need to be under control around wildlife, livestock and other trail users.
  • 🐾  Be wildlife aware. You're heading into their home, so give wildlife plenty of space and keep your dog under control.
  • 🐾  Watch out for snakes, especially during the warmer months. Keep your eyes open and don't let your dog investigate anything they shouldn't.
  • 🐾  Take breaks. Let your dog stop, sniff, drink and rest - the goal is to enjoy the adventure, not race through it.
  • 🐾  Bring a towel. We cannot stress this enough.
  • 🐾  Embrace the mud. Your dog probably will.
  • 🐾  Leave no trace. Take your rubbish with you, pick up after your dog and help keep these beautiful areas enjoyable for everyone.

The dogs' verdict

Four dogs. Two Great Danes, two Mini Dachshunds. 12km of adventuring - 9km of forest trails and 3km of parklands and creek exploring. Swimming, wildlife watching, new smells, fresh air, zoomies, mud, and a whole lot of exploring.

Would we recommend Kenilworth?

100%. If you're looking for a dog-friendly day trip from Brisbane, Kenilworth is absolutely worth adding to your list. There's something pretty special about swapping the usual neighbourhood walk for a day of trails, new smells, muddy paws and exploring somewhere new together.

It's a chance to let your dog simply be a dog - sniffing, exploring, running, swimming, getting dirty and taking in everything around them. And doing it with their best dog friends makes it even better.

Our Kenilworth adventure was the perfect reminder that you don't need an elaborate holiday to make amazing memories with your dog. Sometimes you just need a car full of dogs, a few good friends, a packed bag and somewhere new to explore.

So, pack the dogs. Kenilworth, we'll definitely be back. 🐾
